Beer Goggins’ Beer Garden Series: Mission Dolores

Even when building a beer garden from the ground up, you have to start somewhere. That’s possibly why the two brothers who brought us Bar Great Harry in Cobble Hill, started with a vacated auto shop in Park Slope when they created Mission Dolores, a beer garden with an old soul and a modern twist.

Described as “that weird beer bar at 4th and Carroll,” just around the corner from the beer geek haven at Bierkraft, the bar was quickly refurbished and equipped with twenty tap lines and one cask selection before opening April 1 of this year.

A majority of the beers served here are locals, like Sixpoint, Kelso and Captain Lawrence, with the occasional West coaster traveling across the country to be served at this beer garden. And a few of the taps are even dedicated to great foreign beers. Currently, patrons can even find a few pretty rare brews on tap, including Goose Island’s Bourbon County Stout and Flying Dog’s Raging Bitch on cask.

Bar goers can also order anything from whiskey to Underberg, a traditional German digestif bitter which is generally taken as a shot. Their Bloody Mary concoction is also wildly popular on an average Saturday afternoon when you can find hipsters, prepsters, beer geeks and even a random women’s rugby team celebrating over a few pints.

To soak up all this booze, select meat pies from DUB are served. But, if meat pie isn’t really your cup of tea, feel free to order from any of the numerous surrounding restaurants and have them deliver the meal directly to your seat at the bar or at one of the many wooden tables made from reclaimed firewood.

A lot of the fixtures, walls, doors and furnishings found around the bar come from reclaimed materials. Perhaps it’s this kind of detail that really makes this space unique. While only a portion of the entire bar is actually in the open air (and is more of a courtyard than a garden), this space is certainly a great addition to the many beer bars within Brooklyn and certainly to the category of beer gardens in the New York City area.
