A couple weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to get a little taste of what’s to come for this year’s New York City Beer Week, which launches February 22 and will run through March 3. This being the fifth consecutive beer week, a lot of great breweries are taking part in the festivities this year. The preview was held at Heartland Brewery in Times Square and allowed us to take a peek at what was to come.
Among those breweries taking part this year (and who also attended the preview event last month) are KelSo, 508 Gastrobrewery (a brewery newly helmed by Chris Cuzme), Bronx Brewery, Sixpoint Craft Ales (who brought along their latest 3Beans brew), the brewing team at Birreria, Schmaltz, Chelsea Brewing Company and Rockaway Brewing. (Our friends over at BeerUnion have more coverage of the preview event.)
In all, over 30 local breweries will be taking part and I for one am very excited to get the festivities going. Here’s a list of events you should consider adding to your calendar:
Friday, February 22: Opening Night Bash at Galapagos Art Space
Starts at 10:00pm
Hosted at the Brooklyn event space on Main Street, this event will feature a tasting of over 20 craft beers. Tickets are $45 and include an official tasting glass and unlimited tastings. The party will last as long as the beer lasts.
Wednesday, February 27: Brewers’ Choice at City Winery
Hosted by Beer Sessions’ own Jimmy Carbone and Dave Brodrick of Blind Tiger, this event will pair over 20 craft brews with local eats from NYC chefs. Scott Vaccaro of Captain Lawrence will deliver the keynote speech this year. Early bird tickets are $60 and that includes lots of delicious food and beer.
Friday, March 1: Special Release Party at Brooklyn Brewery
If you’re one of the 25 lucky ticket winners, you’ll be treated to a exclusive, special party at the Brooklyn Brewery. The brewery will be debuting their latest Brewmaster’s Reserve, a double white that has yet to be named — and will not be available in the US. Tickets are being given away by the brewery on their Facebook page and the New York Beer Week Facebook page.
Saturday, March 2: aPORKalypse Now New York Beer Festival at Alewife NYC
12:00-3:00pm and 4:00-7:00pm
Pig-centric gourmet dishes prepared by a variety of local chefs will be paired with numerous local craft brews. The fest is split into two sessions, one starting at noon and the second starting at 4pm. Tickets for either session are priced at $40. Those who attend will be able receive 10 beer tastings to be paired with 10 pork dishes.
There will be hundreds of events going on at your favorite beer bars and elsewhere during the week. Make sure you check in with the New York City Brewers’ Association and a few bars taking part, including Jimmy’s No. 43, Blind Tiger, Alewife NYC, Sunswick Astoria and many others for the latest on their New York Beer Week schedule.
